Fire razed 29 families' Barns, help sought Print E-mail

SIAHA: A fire which villagers started in the forest destroyed a big rice barn(storehouse) in Lialaipi, Matupi Township, Chin state Myanmar. They lost 3,000 tins of rice. Non-Residents Maras are looking ways to raise funds and donations for the victims.
 

A fire which villagers started in the forest destroyed a big rice barn(storehouse) in Lialaipi, Matupi Township, Chin state Myanmar. They lost 3,000 tins of rice. Non-Residents Maras are looking ways to raise funds and donations for the victims.
 
In the first week of this month, the farmers in Lialaipi(Lailenpi) village set fire to the forest and could not stop it from spreading. It burnt down a rice store where storage space was shared by 29 families.
 
A local said a lot of suffering is in store for the people after what has happened. They rely on the stored rice as the government cannot supply substantial amount of rice. But now that the store is burnt down they will face problems.
 
The farmers had made a storehouse in the forest and stocked their rice.
 
From the rice store they used to sell rice at Kyat 1,400 a tin to religious leaders, government employees like those in education, health, post office, telecom in Lailenpi.
 
Lialaipi village registers the highest production rice around Matupi Township. After the main storehouse was burnt some of the other villagers donated 700 tins of rice to the families. The government did not do anything.
 
Last March also a forest fire burnt 20 houses in Pasei Khithie (New Pasin) village and 30 houses in Matupi Township.
 
There are over 400 families settled in Lialaipi village. The Headquarter of Mara people in Myanmar(Burma) commonly known as East Maraland. Most of them are into farming.
 
In March and April forests tend to catch fire and houses and rice stores are destroyed every year. Although the villagers try to prevent it in the best way they can. There are no fire engines as in cities and there are some problems of transportation. So they are used to losing their property.

Rev. John Byhna of South East Asia Mission Center in Kuala Lumpur informed Mara community in different parts of the world through Maraunawzy, a popular yahoo group, to come forward and help the victims. Those who are requested to collect these funds are listed below:

7. Norway Mara - Puhpa Sicho, Puhpa AungTha, Puhpa Titu
8. Denmark Mara-Puhpa Vatie, Puhpa Silei, Puhpa Biepheisa
9. Canada Mara- Puhpa Chhitu, Puhpa Neithlypaw
10. Korea Mara - Rev.Vako , Rev.Saehmo, Puhpa Ngosa.
