why the hell on earth is the very popularly known among the educated zoram christians - churches of maraland in the newly issued mizoram statistical handbook. It might be due to the ignorance or the incapability of the officer in charge. Blame should be on him or them who is or are incharge of this issue and not on the whole population of the mizos living in the north of mizoram.

Hi Isaac,

There is a growing feeling among Maras that there is a deliberate attempt to ignore anything that defines the identity of Mara people - that may include any words that contains Maraland within Mizoram. Evangelical Church of Maraland (ECM) falls within that backdrop. Check the list of Churches in Mizoram at Mizoram gov't official website. Salvation Army, Roman Catholic, etc are listed while ECM is missing let alone the stats book.

These kind of developments went unnoticed except this time. Time will tell when any unfair treatments on Mara people will backfire. Its just a matter of TIME.

"There is a growing feeling among Maras that there is a deliberate attempt to ignore anything that defines the identity of Mara people....".The feeling of deliberatly sidelining anything that defines the identity of Mara people has, since quite sometime now, been blowing like a cool-breeze.

Punitive attempts/protests have been made at the State Legislative Assembly regarding the "Lusie-Duhlianization" of other Mizo dialects and terms. If my memory still supports me, it was our hon'ble Members Zakhu Hlychho and K.T. Rokhaw who had raised such issues in the Assembly regarding the Sawlakia dance, which is deliberately pronounced/named by our Lusei-speaking brothers as "Sarlamkai", totally ignoring the sentiments of native Mara-speakers.

Sidelining of the sentiments of native-speakers of the language is not at all a positive development, especially when speakers of the dominant tongue (read Lusei) claims of building a all-inclusive "Mizo" nation.

A glimpse of the map of Mizoram will tell you to what extent we've been Duhlianized. Except for a few exceptions, no village in Maraland bears a Mara name. Eg., Zawngling, Tipa, Chapui etc. And, even our spiritual El Dorado, Saikoa isn't spared of the humilation!

The MADC and our elected representatives in the Assembly, I believe, can take the necessary steps and actions to rectify this humilation. When cosmopolitian cities like Bombay,Bangalore and Chennai etc can change names, to appease an already dwindling and minority native speakers..(for whatever reasons), why not we? Aren't we still the majority in our land?
