AIZAWL, Jan 14 : The Annual Plan for Mizoram for the year 2008-09 was finalised at Rs 1,000 crore, including the additional central assistance of Rs 70 crore for projects of special interest to the state.

This was finalised at a meeting held in New Delhi between Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga.

Appreciating the efforts made the state government in accelerating infrastructure development, the Deputy Chairman added that significant progress has also been achieved in the sectors of road transport, power, education and health.

He said that while 94.4 per cent of the villages have been connected with approach roads, 98.6 per cent villages have been electrified; some sectors like transport, education and health have expanded rapidly contributing to the tertiary sector income.

Further informing that all districts of the state would be covered under National Rural Employment Guaranteed (NREG) scheme from next year, Ahluwalia said the state needs to explore horticulture and floriculture potential.

Talking about the state government’s initiatives at establishing health infrastructure in Mizoram, Ahluwalia pointed out that efforts should be intensified to fill the gap in trained teachers and doctors. He also drew the state government’s attention towards decrease in dense forests in the region.

The Chief Minister said that the agriculture and allied sector and rural development with emphasis on self sufficiency in food production, employment generation and poverty eradication will be priority of the Annual Plan 2008-09.

To cope up with the famine like situation arising as a result of bamboo flowering, Zoramthanga said that the state government is expecting additional help under NREG scheme in increasing agriculture production and developing rural infrastructure.
