AIZAWL, March 4 : At least 23 people, most of them children, have died of meningitis which has spread in an epidemic-like proportions in a remote area of Mizoram’s Saiha district since November, state health department sources said here on Monday.

Health department officials said a medical team has reached Mizoram-Myanmar border Zawngling village where 13 children died during November-December last year.

Meningitis affected Saiha, Tuipang, Niawhtlang and surrounding villages, the officials said, adding the cause of so many deaths was mainly due to ignorance of the villagers who failed to receive medical treatment at the initial stage of infection.

The information regarding the epidemic-like situation was received late by the health department as the area is remote and almost inaccessible, the officials added.

Where did they get the info about the inaccessibility of these villages?Niawhtlang & Zawngling are connected with BRTF roads and are easily accessible.I think the Health Deptt is not serious enough to contain the disease. They must act swiftly if seriuos enough.

@burgerstud: Right on the SPOT. You are right. There are mobile phone services in Zawngling (I hate to call Zawngling, it is Zyhno and it is not Zawng and Ling).

The officials know only Aizawl city and other major towns. Villages in Mizoram are neglected in all fields. That is the bottom-line.

To me,Zyhno & Zawngling do not make differences.Maraness in not about calling names, and not from outside, but from within.

burgerstud, that's where the problem lies.

Firstly, these people do not want us have our identity. Zyhno and Zawngling makes a lot of difference. This is how they are trying to assimilate us into all-Lusei aka Duhlian speaking people to be known by outsiders as Mizos. Maras will never accept to be called Mizos "if they have to abandon their language, culture, etc,."

One must know the ugly face of assimilation of some Duhlian speaking guys. Don't you know that no Mara speaking contractors are give big projects within the district lately? All these are the scheme of things.

@Jade:I do not subsribe to your view.Maras are the Mizos. They dont have to be accepted by the so-called Mizos.Maras are Mizo by themselves. Its not about acceptance of Aizawl people or the others. There is no a sub-tribe called Mizo.Mizo is a group of people. It is made up of Mara,Lais,Paihtes,Hmars,Hrangkhawl,Ralte etc.Its not a clan.Who is a Mizo?.Nobody is a Mizo.Maras have a distinct culture as one of the groups of Mizos. They dont have to abandon their social practices and cultures.

When talking about assimilation, there is no way to get them assimilated. Those who make fun of the cultural practices of Maras are making a fool out of themselves. These are the only views of the narrow minded people from Aizawl only.

If contractors are not given a fair share in the district projects, its a discrimation.Yes,of course, the government, not the PEOPLE OF AIZAWL,is giving the district as a whole a step motherly treatment. All we need to do is not to trap again in the imaginary promises of all politicians.

@burgerstud2005: I said Maras will never accept to be called Mizos "if they have to abandon their language, culture, etc,."

Read the line carefully. You forgot to mention Language. The great assimilation plan and scheme is to come in Mizo's clothing which does seem to fit everyone but all the Lusei speaking people want is that one day, all of us will be able to say, "My parents were Lakhers/Maras". We do not want such thing to happen. Maras are fine whether they are clubbed as Chin which is another name given by Burmese majority or Zo as long as our identity is preserved and the language is the denominator of our identity.

There must be an acceptance of Mara language as one of the Mizo languages - not as Mizo 2 or 3. Who wants to be Mizo 2 oe 3? Such crazy ideas are conceived by some crazy guys out there!

@Jade:Well said.Even though I am not a Mara but I do believe that discrimination is there not assimilation.I hate to call all Zo Hnahthlak who do not fluent in Duhlian tawng as Mizo 2,3 or 5.There is no such types of Mizos.

Yes you got it right:you said these crazy stuffs are propagated by some crazy guys. Please do not get alienated from Mizos because of some vested interests.I strongly support your frustration and discontent on being called Mizos. The Maras should get their fair share in development works under Mizoram. And Mara also should be accepted as one of MIL in the school/college exams.I do support this. But please do not blame all those people living outside Saiha District.

The above comment over mind is absolutely right,in this kind of situation, its not right thing and not right time to talk or discuss about similarity and dissimilarities or difference. Instead, let us put our heads together and contribute some ideas and thoughts to help or to remind the caretakers of health deptt. in tackling such kind of crisis. We do all know how, why, what, which and to whom it is meant. I,even,do am mara, extremely pure mara and absolute mara,i love-myself, my mara friends, maraness and every thing about maraland as the way you do my friends. But sometimes i against my own community friends in this kind of situations. Its not the right time to discuss about from where we came, we belong and to where we are heading, we know what is right and wrong, bad and good since we are no longer a child, and its a time hide away our childish acts, and know the right time, place, thing and person. This is unwise to discuss about other things and stuffs over one particular topic like Meningitis. Just think about it shows one's stupidity and immaturity.

So let us dicuss about reason behind the story id est shortfalls of health deptt. or their unconcernity over the poor village residents, or other related drawbacks.

If you guys really want to argue about the differece between mizo and mara and discrimination by the state Gov't particularly to mara district in each and every fields, kindly and patiently wait...we'll try to bring one topic and at that time can argue it, fight it and the likes of what you like....
