NEW DELHI, Aug 31 (PTI) Government has asked the Mizoram to take a speedy decision on an NTPC proposal to set up 460-MW Kolodyne hydel power project in the north-eastern state at an investment of Rs 2,500 crore.
Public sector enterprise NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation - www.ntpc.co.in) has submitted a proposal to the state government to develop the hydel project that promises "new avenues of development in Mizoram", the Power Ministry has said in a communication to the state.
It said the project "fits in well with the Kaladan multi-modal transport-cum-transit project under implementation in Myanmar by the Government of India".
Under the Hydel Power Policy of 2008, 13 per cent of the power generated from the project will be available to Mizoram free of cost.
Besides, "every effort will be made to maximise local employment and carry out rehabilitation in a most sensitive and responsive manner," it said.
The project would be developed as a regional power station which would supply electricity to the north-eastern states.
NTPC, the country's largest power producer with bulk of it coming from the thermal stations, has recently forayed into hydel generation. It is executing hydel projects in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It is also in talks with the Arunachal Pradesh Government for similar projects.
